Sand dunes on the CSR |
In 2002, Melbourne 4WD journalist Anthony Kilner lead a 4WD trip of the
Canning Stock Route (CSR) in Western Australia.
Anthony used Cooper STT Tyres (285/75x16) on his heavily laden 80
Series Landcruiser.
Here's what he said about tyres in Australian 4WD Monthly, Issue 49:
"Once off the major roads the sandy dunes of the CSR can become
challenging to say the least. Lowering the tyre pressures is the only
way you'll get through easily without damage to the tracks or your
vehicle. Travelling the CSR will see your vehicle laden with heaps
of fuel and food, probably more than you've ever loaded before. This
scared people into thinking they can't drop their pressures down. This
is evidenced by the chopped up conditions of the dunes and the literal
'runways' on either side. The corrugations formed on the flats are
caused by heavy loads and high tyre pressures and unless graded, will
get progressively worse with time, making travel very unpleasant.
The right tyre pressures vary greatly depending on vehicle weight,
tyre size and weather conditions. When it's hot the sand becomes loose
and fine, making travel over the dunes harder. Fully laden my Cruiser
weighed in just under the 3500kg mark. For much of the CSR I ran tyre
pressures down around 16psi on the front and 20psi on the rear. I changed
these at regular intervals because of hot weather and soft sand, with
the average pressure being around 22 and 24psi.
The trick to protecting your tyres when they are so low is to keep
your speed down and watch where you place your tyres to avoid staking
them. Rocks in places are quite sharp but with lower pressures the
tyre will mould over the rocks relatively easily. These lower tyre
pressures enabled the group to stop at the base of most dunes and walk
up in 1st high or 2nd low depending on their fourby."

Route. At Cooper Tires, we have the most suitable tyres for outback
travel.
